About Tameside
Tameside is a metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester, created in 1974 from nine former mill towns on the eastern edge of the county. It takes its name from the River Tame and includes towns such as Ashton-under-Lyne (the administrative centre), Stalybridge, Hyde, and Dukinfield. Historically dominated by the cotton industry, it has a population of around 227,000. Landmarks include the Portland Basin Museum at the junction of three canals, the Astley Cheetham Art Gallery, the Tameside Hippodrome, and Park Bridge, an early ironworks site.
