About Barnsley
Barnsley is a metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire, historically a major coal mining area at the heart of the Yorkshire coalfield. The town of Barnsley is the administrative centre, with other towns including Penistone, Hoyland, and Cudworth. The western part of the borough extends into the scenic Pennine foothills. It has a population of around 245,000. Regeneration has transformed the town centre with The Glass Works development. Notable landmarks include the Experience Barnsley museum, Cannon Hall Museum and Park, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (partly within the borough), and the Penistone viaduct.
